Day 168, Evening

Today’s evening meditation is available below in audio and script formats. The audio version is also available for free download on the player.

“When the soul is naughted and transformed, she is so full of peace that though she press her flesh, her nerves, her bones, no other thing comes forth from them than peace.”

—Saint Catherine of Genoa

When everything you do is to please the Lord, your life is very simple. It is not that you don’t face complicated problems; everyday life is likely to bring challenges, but you have learned to face them without inner turmoil. You are no longer interested in pleasing yourself or in pleasing anybody else in particular; you want only to please God.

Putting others first is an area in which the mind can often play tricks on us. Interestingly enough, often when we believe we are thinking of others and putting their needs first, we are really just trying to please – which means we are really thinking about ourselves. When we truly are putting others first, we cannot but feel at peace with ourselves. (WLB)

As your day draws to a close, spend a few moments in silence and stillness, giving yourself a break from all the pressures and demands, and the need to please everyone around you.

• for wide appreciation of the beauty and complexity of creation

• for the care of creation

• for those suffering persecution for their faith
